Carbon Weight

Welcome to Carbon Weight

Yes, yet another global warming website.

Carbon Weight: What?

Add up the Carbon Weights to get a Carbon Footprint

  • Carbon Footprints are Buckets.
  • Carbon Weights are the weights of the things in the Bucket.

Why Carbon Weight?

Carbon Footprints are tough to figure out

  • Value Chains: A linked chain (value chain) goes into most things we do. A cup of coffee at a cafe has beans grown in Brazil, picked, bundled, packed, shipped to the US, processed, shipped, processed in a retail store and appears on your table. Very simple things just go through lots of steps.
  • Unknowns: We don't know the Carbon Weight of each step. We actually have very little ability, especially with multiple chains of supply, knowing what the contribution is for each step. This means there is a lot of guessing.
  • In My Opinion...: Politics and Opinion gets mixed into what steps to actual include. Do you include the employee's carbon footprint that made the coffee? Do you include the life-cycle of the truck that shipped it to the cafe? Do you include the consumption of green house gases by the coffee beans? Each of these decisions are based on ones perspective.

Carbon Weights: So its complex, let's start by breaking the problem down into a set of questions we can answer and what we can control. For example, a small cafe can have very little impact controlling the carbon weight of the ship that moves coffee to the US, unless it is Starbucks of course. The cafe can control the carbon weight of individual actions that make up the carbon footprint of that one cafe.

So Why Bother?

This is a tough question. So build a website, look for the answers, engage others and share. Maybe, together, we can figure it out.

Vehicles are responsible for over half (51%) of the carbon dioxide emissions for a typical household.
